OPPORTUNITY

Design a mobile experience based on the pain-points from a real-life story.

APPROACH

Based on my health journey, I took the challenges I faced and translated them into app features. Considering the perspective of other women in similar but different situations, these core app features evolved into a mobile experience that keeps people accountable to make healthier choices and learn about health on a mind, body, spiritual level.

THE STORY

How Flourish came to be

In my mid-20s, I faced unexplained health issues with no solutions in sight. Experiencing the flaws of standard healthcare, I took matters into my own hands to not just treat symptoms but address the root cause of my ailments. Through extensive research in nutrition and naturopathic medicine, I sought to create a health plan to renew my health.

I discovered not only the answers to a 55-pound weight loss in 4 months but lasting restored health.

Everything’s connected

I studied core body systems and discovered that different areas of our body communicate and influence one another, impacting both our physical and emotional well-being.

I also took inventory of different aspects of life that may contribute to the state of my health.

Admitting where you’re at

The best place to start was to be honest with myself and record how I felt about my overall health at the beginning of my journey.

Select areas of focus

Exploring different areas of the body and narrowing down what symptoms to address.

Learn about food through color

Learn about ingredients that can help ease and reverse symptoms.

Simple instructions on how to prepare various ingredients.

Learn about foods within this color category to avoid and why.

Save foods you

love most to a custom list.

Save foods to a list organized by color, with an option to view foods you want to avoid.

Log what you eat by color.

Users can gauge what they eat daily and aim to have a variety of colors in their diet without the pressure to calorie count.

Additionally, people can utilize a food diary feature to upload a photo of their meals and take note of the ate.

Persona stories

I created personas and talked to women in similar situations to better understand the pain points of their story to define app features and offer solutions unique to their needs that others could relate to.

Sketches & flow diagram

I created several flow diagrams to refine the overall experience and key app features. This allowed me to thoughtfully consider the user's journey and anticipate for their needs and what they would they would see and interact with.

Paper prototyping & testing

I took each screen view element from the user flows and created sketches of what the screens would look like. I conducted user testing with a variety of people and backgrounds to obtain feedback.

User feedback and results

  • During the paper prototype phase, the app used a heavy amount of lists. This revealed the opportunity to use more imagery, color and a fish-eye scroll to improve engagment with content navigation.

  • Users wanted to know more information about the ingredients and how to prepare them.

Future enhancements

  •  Integrate a social aspect to save and share recipes.

  • Archiving the latest clinical studies to validate research on ingredients and naturopathic approaches.

  • Accessibility refinements for those who are colorblind or have impaired vision.
